Batu Arang was established as a coal mining town during the British colonial era about 100 years ago. A brick factory, one of the first in Malaysia was also set up not too long after. Both industries have since been replaced by agriculture and a bullet & ammunation factory. The town is largely undeveloped since its coal mining heyday, and has managed to keep intact its rural setting amidst picturesque old mining pools and lush greenery.
